The 1st Shift – Technology. Transition. Trust. We are delighted to introduce you to The Shift, the new magazine from our Environment & Energy business area.
The Shift Snippets
ALTERNATIVE PROTEINS: CHANGING THE WAY WE EAT AND FEED THE WORLD
Did you know that producing one kilogram of beef can require around 15,400 liters of water?
As global demand for protein continues to grow, alternative proteins are emerging as an important complement to existing food and feed systems. Many production pathways require fewer resources and can significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions. ANDRITZ supports producers with advanced technologies for processing plant-based ingredients, insects, and other novel protein sources – helping them achieve efficient, sustainable, and high-quality protein production.
FLUE GASES: GIVING CAPTURED EMISSIONS A SECOND LIFE
Did you know the walls of a modern office building may contain material recovered from industrial emissions?
Most people think of flue gas cleaning as the end of a process. In reality, it can also be the start of something new. In limestone-based wet flue gas desulfurization systems, sulfur dioxide (SO₂) is removed from the flue gas and converted into gypsum. This gypsum can then be used in products such as plasterboards, supporting a more circular use of resources.
ANIMAL FEED: GIVING BYPRODUCTS A SECOND LIFE
Did you know that up to 37 % of the ingredients used in animal feed come from byproducts of other food and agricultural processes?
Long before the term ”circular economy“ existed, animal feed producers were already turning nutrient-rich co-products from food and agricultural production into valuable feed ingredients, helping ensure that virtually nothing with nutritional value goes to waste. Through advanced feed processing technologies, ANDRITZ helps customers transform these diverse raw materials into safe, high-quality feed while making the most of available resources.
Power on the slopes: Innovative energy solutions in ski resorts
Did you know ski resorts can boost their energy independence by turning snowmaking ponds into pumped storage systems?
Traditionally, these systems are known for bigger scale, but innovative solutions now make it possible to use existing smaller ponds for energy storage. With rising energy demands and the push for renewables, ANDRITZ provides pumping technology adapted for smaller-scale applications – helping ski resorts store and generate power efficiently while promoting sustainable resource use in alpine regions.
Bluer skies ahead – with clean air technologies!
Did you know astronauts aboard the International Space Station can actually see smog from space?
Air pollution over major cities is visible from orbit and in some regions, poor air quality persists for hundreds of days each year. To tackle this, governments are increasingly focusing on measures like “point source control,” which targets specific emission sources. ANDRITZ contributes to cleaner air with advanced single- and multistage solutions that help reduce emissions and improve air quality worldwide.
Sweet history: from luxury item and medicine to everyday treats
Did you know sugar was once a luxury item – and even used as medicine?
Until around 1850, it was so expensive that only the wealthy could afford it. As prices dropped, sugar transformed from a rare remedy into a kitchen staple, used for preserving, decorating, and sweetening food. This shift paved the way for the treats we love today! ANDRITZ supports this sweet journey with cutting-edge solutions for sugar processing, helping producers maximize quality and efficiency.
